The new median wage of NZD $31.61 an hour will be adopted into the immigration system in February 2024.

Many visa categories, including work and skilled residence applications require of applicants to meet median wage requirements.

Most of the wage thresholds linked to the median wage will undergo revisions. This applies to various visa categories, including the Accredited Employer Visa (AEWV), the Skilled Migrant Category, and some occupations covered by Sector Agreements and the Green List.

It’s worth noting that wage thresholds for parent category visas will receive separate updates. Furthermore, the wage threshold for the tourism and hospitality sector will undergo a separate adjustment in April 2024.

To ensure transparency and preparedness, a standard process was introduced last year, facilitating the annual update of the median wage in the immigration system each February. This timeline grants businesses approximately six months to adapt to the new wage standards, coinciding with Statistics NZ’s updates.

As the implementation date approaches, INZ will provide more information to employers with comprehensive details regarding the implications of these changes and provide specific dates for their convenience.
